Producer Profile
Domaine Vincent & François Jouard is a boutique, family-run estate that serves as a definitive benchmark for the “true” style of Chassagne-Montrachet. While many Burgundy houses have expanded their reach across the Côte d’Or, the Jouard brothers have remained fiercely local, focusing almost exclusively on their ancestral home to produce whites of immense power, old-vine concentration, and classic Burgundian richness.
The family’s legacy in Chassagne stretches back to 1820, but the modern era of the domaine truly began in 1990. That was the year brothers Vincent and François took the reins, later joined by the next generation, Pierre-Henri, to cement the estate’s reputation for uncompromising quality.
The Specialist’s Terroir
The estate manages 11 hectares of prime real estate, with nearly all holdings situated within the Chassagne-Montrachet appellation. This deep local knowledge allows them to navigate the complex “mosaic” of Chassagne’s limestone and clay soils with surgical precision.
Their holdings include the crown jewel Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru, a wine of monumental scale and saline depth, as well as several prestigious Premier Crus. These include the powerhouse Morgeot (Les Fairendes), which is broad and intensely structured, and the high-altitude Les Chaumées (Clos de la Truffière), which yields the most vertical and mineral-driven expression in the cellar.
The “Vieilles Vignes” Mandate
At Jouard, the concept of “Vieilles Vignes” (Old Vines) is not a marketing term; it is a strict operational mandate. The brothers generally only bottle wine under the family label if the vines are at least 50 years old. Fruit from younger vines is typically sold off to high-end négociants, ensuring only the most concentrated fruit makes the final cut.
Vincent manages the vineyards with “reasoned protection” (lutte raisonnée), employing regular plowing to force the roots deep into the limestone bedrock. This capture of the mineral “sap” from centenarian root systems is what gives their wines such profound density and character.
The Craft: Generosity Meets Precision
Winemaker François Jouard balances traditional richness with contemporary precision, aiming to capture the “generosity” of Chassagne without sacrificing clarity.
- Elevage: The wines are aged for 11 months in French oak, with roughly one-third new oak sourced from elite coopers like Chassin and Billon.
- Texture: The wines undergo bâtonnage (lees stirring) to build that iconic creamy mouthfeel, followed by a two-month resting period in tank to allow the wine to harmonize.
- Preservation: Every bottle is finished under nitrogen protection to ensure the vibrant citrus and floral notes remain perfectly preserved.
