Producer Profile

Chateau Pouget is a family estate and the smaller of the 1855 Classified

Growths. Its name was given in the XVIIth century by Francois Antoine Pouget,

Conseiller du Roy under Louis XV of France. A hundred years later, its coat-ofarms,

still present on today’s label, was granted by the Marechal-Duc de Richelieu.
Over the past five generations, it is the Guillemet family that has been
fondly taking care of this 10-hectare vineyard.

The vines are all located on the gravels of the Terrasse 3, one of the most typical

soils of the Margaux appellation. They are managed with practical sense

and conviction. Chateau Pouget was a pioneer in eco-friendly practices being

one of the first classified growths to introduce sexual confusion in its vineyard.

In the cellar, the wines reflect the finesse of their terroir. The Guillemet family

also has a very meticulous approach to wood aging. They are directly involved

in the selection of their merrains (staves) depending on their origin and the

quality of their grain. This thorough method is rare even in the very precise

world of Classified Growths!

The wines are very delicate and Margaux-like while also affirming their aging

potential and a very precise, fine, and powdery tannin grain that is the true

signature of Ch.teau Pouget.

AGEING over 12 to 15 months in barrels. 75% new barrels.

VARIETIES 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc et 4% Petit Verdot.

TERROIR silicious gravel.

Tasting Notes

Vinous 90

The 2018 Pouget, which has been on a good run of form recently, has ample blackberry and raspberry fruit on the nose, touches of potpourri and peony emerging with time and rendering this Margaux quite floral. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins and well-judged acidity. Quite spicy toward the finish, revealing white pepper and just a very slight garrigue and brown spice note. Yep, this ll do nicely. [Neal Martin, 08/03/2021]
