Description
The 2018 Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir is a landmark vintage from one of Australia’s most iconic “cult” producers. Located in the cool, humid sub-region of Leongatha in South Gippsland, Bass Phillip is widely considered to produce the closest stylistic match to the great Grand Crus of Burgundy found anywhere in the Southern Hemisphere.
The 2018 vintage is particularly significant as it represents the final years of founder Phillip Jones’s direct winemaking before the estate was acquired by a group led by Jean-Marie Fourrier (of Domaine Fourrier).
The 2018 season in Gippsland was excellent—characterized by a warm, dry summer that allowed for perfect phenolic ripeness while maintaining the signature Gippsland acidity.
The Blend: 100% Pinot Noir from the Estate vineyards.
Winemaking: Fermented in small open-top vats with indigenous yeasts.
Aging: Matured for approximately 20 months in French oak (approx. 25% new). The long aging period allows the intense fruit and firm tannins to integrate into a seamless, velvety whole.
The Appearance: Deep translucent ruby with violet highlights.
The Nose: Complex and “brooding.” Aromas of dark plum, wild strawberry, and damp earth, layered with exotic spices, dried rose petals, and a hint of gamey complexity.
The Palate: Full-bodied for a Pinot Noir, showing incredible structural tension. It leads with concentrated red and black fruits, supported by ultra-fine, “silken” tannins and a vibrant line of acidity.
The Finish: Exceptionally long, with a persistent mineral/savory finish that echoes of undergrowth and spice.
