The 2012 Guidalberto (Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot) impresses for the approachable, yet intriguing, delivery of fruit. The style is fruit-forward and ripe, yet the wine is not banal. There’s a fluidity to the bouquet that brings it to cherry and blackberry with soft tones of leather and tobacco woven deep within. The mouthfeel is voluptuous and rich without feeling heavy or flat. The 2012 vintage shows good energy and verve, with a long flavor trail of chocolate and toasted espresso that leaves a favorable mark. Introducing Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta, the newest generation to personify Italy’s leading wine family. Under the guidance of her father, Marchese Nicolo Incisa della Rocchetta, Priscilla is taking an increasingly visible role at Tenuta San Guido. She flew to Kuala Lumpur (the same morning flight Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 went missing) to attend the Robert Parker Grand World Tour in March 2014. This was one of her first major public appearances representing her family’s winery. Sassicaia 1985 was poured from magnums that night, and Priscilla timidly admitted that she had only tasted the wine two or three times previously. She said she was nervous that the wine would not show well. She had absolutely no reason to worry: The 1985 Sassicaia was by far the most memorable wine tasted during that leg of the World Tour.
Anticipated maturity: 2015-2024
San Guido’s 2012 Guidalberto is a bit lighter than most other recent vintages, but it shows lovely definition and purity in its flavors. Expressive floral notes meld into bright red berries and spices in a forward, supple Guidalberto to drink now and over the next few years. Guidalberto is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot.
Anticipated maturity: 2014-2017
