Description

The 2018 Rudolf Fürst Klingenberger Spätburgunder is a sophisticated and “transparent” expression of Franken terroir, leveraging fruit from the steep red sandstone terraces of the Schlossberg vineyard. Utilizing a high proportion of whole-cluster fermentation and aging in neutral oak, Sebastian Fürst has crafted a wine that balances the solar richness of the 2018 vintage with an “electric” acidity and vertical mineral energy.

Hailed by Anne Krebiehl MW as “Germany’s finest,” the wine offers a haunting bouquet of wild strawberries, black cherry, and iron-rich smoke, supported by a silken palate and fine-grained tannins. This 94-point village red is a masterclass in precision, providing an elegant, Volnay-like experience that promises a graceful evolution through 2034.

Producer Profile

The Architects of German Pinot Noir

Based in the village of Bürgstadt in the western corner of Franken, Weingut Rudolf Fürst is the undisputed benchmark for Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) in Germany. While the family’s viticultural roots trace back to 1638, the estate’s modern legend was forged by Paul Fürst in the late 1970s. Today, his son Sebastian Fürst (Winemaker of the Year 2018) leads the domaine, continuing a legacy of producing wines that rival the finest Premiers and Grands Crus of Burgundy.

The Terroir: The Iron-Rich “Buntsandstein”

The estate’s identity is inseparable from the unique red sandstone (Buntsandstein) soils of the Mainviereck region.

  • The Microclimate: Nestled between the Spessart and Odenwald mountains, the area enjoys a protected, warm microclimate.
  • The Soil Signature: The iron-rich sandstone imparts a distinctive “ferrous” or smoky minerality to the wines. It provides excellent drainage and absorbs heat, ensuring the Pinot Noir reaches phenolic ripeness while maintaining a “cool-toned” aromatic profile.
  • Steep Terraces: The estate is famous for its back-breaking work on steep, dry-stone-walled terraces—specifically in the Schlossberg vineyard—where gradients can reach a staggering 90%.

The Philosophy: Burgundian Soul, German Precision

Sebastian Fürst’s winemaking is defined by transparency and an obsessive focus on texture. Having trained at legendary estates like Domaine de l’Arlot in Nuits-St-Georges, he applies a purely Burgundian methodology.

  • Vineyard First: High planting densities (up to 10,000 vines/ha) and strictly limited yields (averaging 35 hl/ha) ensure concentrated fruit.
  • Whole-Bunch Mastery: A significant proportion of whole clusters (up to 100% in warm years) is used to provide structural “sap” and spicy aromatics.
  • Low-Tech Cellar: Fermentation occurs in open-top wooden vats using indigenous yeasts. The wines mature for 13–18 months in French barriques (with a very judicious use of new oak) and are bottled without filtration.

The Hierarchy of VDP Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) Holdings

The estate manages 21 hectares, with a focus on three world-class sites that each express a different facet of the red sandstone.
