The NV Mailly Brut Réserve is the quintessential “House Style” of Mailly Grand Cru. As a multi-vintage blend, it serves as a benchmark for the consistency and elegance of the village’s north-facing Pinot Noir. It is crafted with 100% Grand Cru fruit, a feat few other houses can claim for their entry-level Brut.
This cuvée is celebrated for its “vinous strength” and mineral freshness, capturing the chalky soul of the Montagne de Reims.
The Craft: The Art of the Blend
The Brut Réserve is a complex puzzle, drawing from a vast library of reserve wines to ensure year-on-year consistency.
The Composition: A classic blend of 75% Pinot Noir and 25% Chardonnay.
The Library: The depth of this wine comes from a massive reserve of base wines approximately 30% to 40% of the blend is composed of reserve wines spanning 10 different vintages, aged in both stainless steel and oak barrels.
The Aging: While the legal minimum for NV Champagne is 15 months, Mailly ages this cuvée for 3 to 4 years on its lees in traditional chalk pits to develop its signature toasty character.
Dosage: Finished as a “Brut” with a dosage of 7 to 8 g/L, providing a perfect balance between crisp acidity and mouth-filling fruit.
The Appearance: A brilliant, iridescent golden yellow with a fine, persistent perlage.
The Nose: Broad and fruity. It opens with aromas of citrus and yellow plum, evolving into classic autolytic notes of freshly buttered bread, toasted hazelnut, and brioche.
The Palate: Full-bodied and harmonious. The initial attack is vibrant with tangerine and nectarine, followed by a creamy mid-palate that reflects its Pinot Noir dominance.
The Finish: Clean and long, marked by a saline, chalky minerality and a refreshing touch of citrus zest.
